About
The mission of The Power to Decide/El Poder De Decidir is to empower the Latino
and low-income communities to make informed decisions about their health and utilize
all the resources at their disposal.
Members of the Hispanic community are disproportionately affected by the lack of
access to basic health resources. This is even more pronounced for those who are low-
income or recent immigrants because of language barriers, acculturation issues, and
undocumented immigration status. These groups are more likely to lack the health
literacy skills needed to make informed decisions about their health. These groups also
may lack knowledge about scientific research and are skeptical about participating in
research activities. As a result, their research needs may be under-represented.
In 2015 we founded a community outreach group called The Power to Decide/El Poder
De Decidir to address these issues in our communities. Our mission was to empower
these communities to make informed choices concerning their health and well-being,
based on the four “pillars” of decision-making, which are:

This group later evolved into a well-organized non-profit organization, through the work
of our Board of Directors and community partners. Today The Power to Decide/El Poder
de Decidir meets its mission goal by partnering with community stakeholders to design
and deliver tailored health workshops. We also partner with other community-based
organizations (Senior Centers, NICE), health systems (Northwell Health), as well as
national scientific institutions (PCORI, National Institute of Health), to represent the
Hispanic communities voices and concerns through research
and evidence-based workshops.
