El Poder de Decidir aims to empower underserved communities, particularly the Spanish-speaking population, to make informed

choices regarding their health and well-being.

Through a series of community meetings, educational materials, and outreach efforts, the organization seeks to educate participants about scientific research, foster research partnerships, and generate comparative effectiveness research (CER) priorities in asthma.

Upcoming Events

EPD also aims to highlight the voices of the Hispanic communities by organizing, conducting, and publishing clinical research that addresses the health concerns of the community.

By engaging community members in these events, the organization hopes to create a platform for collaboration, advocacy, and knowledge-sharing, ultimately improving health outcomes within the Hispanic community. The events are attended by community members, healthcare professionals, researchers, and stakeholders invested in addressing health disparities and advancing healthcare equity.

Our Research

CHEST Training Workshop

The goal of this project is to conduct workshops on
asthma, prevention and treatment, and to train community members with asthma who participate in these workshops to become community asthma trainers. Specifically, we intend to train six community asthma trainers to educate at least 20 asthmatic patients from within their communities with the skills learned through our training program.

PCORI Workshop

Members of the Hispanic community are disproportionately affected by the lack of access to
basic health resources. This is even more pronounced for those who are low- income or recent immigrants because of language barriers, acculturation issues, and undocumented immigration status.

These groups are more likely to lack the health literacy skills needed to make informed decisions about their health. These groups also lack knowledge about scientific research and are skeptical about participating in research activities. As a result, their research needs may be under-represented.
